Axel Emmanuel Gbaou realised a startling truth: the Ivory Coast produced the world's cocoa, but no chocolate. Now, he's training thousands of women to own the "bean-to-bar" revolution.

For decades, Côte d'Ivoire has held a prestigious but bittersweet title: the world's leading source of cocoa beans. While the country supplies nearly 45% of global demand, the vast majority of Ivorian farmers live on less than a dollar a day, largely because the lucrative step of turning those beans into chocolate traditionally happens in Europe. Axel Emmanuel Gbaou, a former banker with a master’s degree in taxation, found this reality "absurd." Growing up in the shade of cocoa trees in a family of farmers, he was struck by the fact that despite producing 2 million tonnes of cocoa annually, there wasn't a single locally-produced chocolate bar in Ivorian supermarkets.

In 2015, Axel decided to leave his stable job at the bank to rise to the challenge. He started with just one kilogram of cocoa in his mother's kitchen, teaching himself the delicate art of chocolate making. After refining his skills with professional pastry chefs and travelling to Paris and Germany for further training, he founded "Le Chocolatier Ivoirien". His mission was clear: to move higher up the value chain and ensure that the wealth generated by cocoa stayed within the communities that grew it.

What makes Axel’s chocolate truly unique is the integration of African culinary heritage. Instead of following European flavour profiles, his workshop in the Abidjan suburb of Cocody produces blends infused with ginger, chilli, plantain chips, and lemongrass. This focus on quality and local taste has paid off; in 2022, his chocolate was named "Best in the World" at the Paris International Agricultural Show, dispelling the myth that African-produced chocolate could not compete with global giants like Nestlé.

Beyond the chocolate bars, Axel’s true passion is social impact. He has developed a massive training program that has already empowered more than 2,000 women cocoa farmers. By teaching these women to ferment, roast, and process their own beans, and even make their own artisanal chocolate, he has helped them raise their income and reduce poverty in remote villages like Azaguie and Fadiegnan. Today, his company produces over 10,000 bars a month, proving that resilience and partnership are the most important ingredients for any entrepreneur.

Axel’s future vision is ambitious; he wants to see Ivorian chocolate lining the shelves of every major international airport and urban store. For Axel, every chocolate bar is more than just a treat; it is a symbol of economic sovereignty and a testament to the power of a dream.

Lessons for Budding Makers

Axel Emmanuel Gbaou’s journey offers valuable insights for aspiring creators and entrepreneurs:

  1. Master the Entire Value Chain: Axel succeeded because he would not accept the title of a raw material supplier. By learning the "bean-to-bar" process, he captured the part of the value chain that was previously being exported.
  2. Empowerment as a Business Strategy: By training 2,000 women, he didn't just help his community; he built a loyal, high-quality supply network that ensured his business had the best raw materials guaranteed.
